Posted by Andrew Bolster on 20 July 2012

We all loved the idea of Gathering Of Lightning, but the PR for it was slightly neglected (mea culpa). Not this time!

On Tuesday, 31st, we’re doing it all over again. Beer, Pizza, and Lightning fast discussions from a range of selected speakers from our own community.

While there will be plenty of time to chat on the day, if you want to ‘book’ a speaking slot, get in touch in any of the dozen or so ways that are available!

After a long stint as our effective critical infrastructure (wiki, redmine, spaceapi, big red button), the oldfsl-eee7 was retired after an uptime of over 100 Days. All major functionality has now been moved to the much higher spec’ed Farbot.

We’ve now got two in-house Raspberry Pis for any members to fiddle with. Ask one of the Directors and they’ll usually know where one of them is!

The Eventspace lighting is being updated, but even in the midst of that we were happy to host... ...

  • Three Months In: Help Wanted

Posted by Andrew Bolster on 8 July 2012

Farset is still here and still going strong post-exam/graduation season, which saw a large proportion of our membership (and directors) being very pressed for time.

Now it’s time to look back over three brilliant months, and to continue to grow in the future. In those three short months, Farset Labs has established itself as a top tech venue in Northern Ireland, and a ‘centre of awesomeness’ for education, knowledge sharing, and industry networking. We’ve been involved in the upcoming TechBritian launch, been listed as a Channel 4 Education space, ran more fantastic events than I’d care to mention, tore apart the building, played host to some of the premier local technology events, as well are representing the geek community at many ‘prestige‘ events.

We have plans in place to expand our work with other organisations, including Fab Labs, the Northern Ireland Assembly, the British Computing Society, among others,

Now we’ve made a bit of a name for ourselves, it’s time to rise to the desires of the community. We are currently in a state where Farset Labs is self-sustaining in terms of the space... ...

  • Project Redecorate starts now!

Posted by Ellen Murray on 12 June 2012

After two months of, although quirky, irrefutably “office” decor, it’s time for our event space to be restored to the Victorian charm from which it arose! For a while, we’ve been playing with the idea of getting rid of the suspended fibre ceiling in the space and exposing the period pillars and beams, and after a day’s experimentation, it’s decided: we’re going ahead!

What the vision entails is exposing the entirety of the building’s original woodwork and support pillars, and restoring them to their former glory. New architectural lighting, black ceiling beams and renovated cable management are all in the master plan, as well as some lovely aesthetic improvements like stripping the cast iron pillars to the bare metal.

    However, we’ll need some assistance.

We currently do not have many sets of ladders which are a crucial part of the project. Limited timescale and funds mean that the ceiling needs to be finished very promptly, so all help possible is appreciated.

    We would greatly appreciate... ...

  • Event Calendar

Posted by Andrew Bolster on 9 June 2012

Hope everyone enjoyed ‘The Summer’! We’ve been busily fiddling away here at Farset Labs.

    Internet, Heating, Electricity, and Stealthii

    • The Lounge is in the middle of ‘Yet Another Rearrangement’
    • Stealthii received his Raspberry Pi and has been making us all insanely jealous

    Ummmmmmm…. Pi…

    • Eoghan has been working on an indicator board
    • CCTV is getting a bump from 4 channel DVR to 16 channel DVR (don’t worry, we’re only using 8 Cameras)
    • RFID is just waiting on our Management and Authentication system to be brought up.
    • M/A is coming along, it is simply a case of getting the main people in a room together at the same time.
    • We now have storage crates available for general use(Thanks DS for their kind donation, and also for writing on every possible panel on every one of them…. Eoghan has only just come down from the IPA fumes!)

    First come, First served

But the ‘Big News’ is the codification of our long term monthly events calendar. We’ve had a lot of fun over... ...
