One Month In
Posted by Andrew Bolster on 6 May 2012
As of today, Farset Labs is one month old.
Well, that’s not entirely true; Farset Labs has several ages…
- 3 weeks since our first big event (SpringUp)
- 3 weeks and 1 day since we got heating
- 1 month in the building (officially)
- 36 days in the building from first ‘preparation’
- 2 months since first discussions with Weavers Court
- 3 months since registration with companies house / HMRC
- 6 months since the property hunt went into full swing (cheers to Eoghan, David, and Conor; a cracking property-survey team)
- 7 months of operating with the name ‘Farset Labs’
- 10 months of running hackathon events with QUESTS and QUB Dragonslayers
- 12 months since founding QUESTS
- 19 months of regular ‘Pub’ meetings with the local tech community, spawning off some great projects and ideas along the way.

FlackNite: 1400 19/05/2012
Internal Event: Members (Free), Day pass (£5)
Flack (Farset Labs hACK) night is the first of a regular programme of 24-hour tech-events.
The challenge is simple; finish a technical project in 24 hours, and be able to stand up in front of your peers and show off your work.
Flack offers a platform for the rapid development of projects, as well as a structured and constructive feedback from peers. Throughout the event, there will be regular breaks to talk through progress on projects, offering participants the opportunity to receive regular feedback on their progress, and the ability to change direction early, or add features suggested by peers, if needed.
Projects can be individual or team based, and the ‘show and tell’ part is optional... ...
SpringUp: Launching Five Startups in 28 Hours
Posted by benbland on 27 April 2012
Hopefully it’s not big-headed to say that we’re chuffed with the outcome of our very first open event last weekend. One of our founding members Matt Campbell brought in a 28-hour non-stop startup hackathon called SpringUp and, to put it simply, five new web businesses were launched overnight. It’s nice when you say it like that.
Congratulations to the competition winners, Alrg, who have created an online recommendation service that lists eateries for people with special dietary needs. They rocked the judges with not only a nicely made site, but also some kick-ass market stats and potential revenue streams. It sounds niche but, in short, WAY more people have food allergies than you think.
But judgement was tough. Although there were only five teams, the quality of projects was humbling. Online arbitrage, car sales, personal finance support, and an app management tool, all built by teams of two to five people in one sitting. Well almost one sitting. Everyone bailed for brief sleep eventually, except one – massive props... ...
Planned Event: Embedded Programming; Fun with Boards
Posted by Andrew Bolster on 26 April 2012
Farset Labs is planning on running an event to introduce any person of any age to embedded programming; spanning from building your own controller board that you can take home, right up to programming it with some basic functionality. But we want to get the community’s opinion before we set anything in stone.
Please, take a minute of your time to fill out this survey so we can make the best event for you.
