  • Happy Birthday to Us

Posted by Andrew Bolster on 6 April 2013

A Year ago today, Farset Labs opened it’s doors for the first time.

    Before (judge for yourselves)

    Before (judge for yourselves)

After having spent months in property hunting, and searching for commercial support, and years of community development, with a meagre equipment list, 12 paying members, three (also paying) directors, 2000sqft of dirty, dusty, derelict, (and occasionally, dangerous) workspace and a financial timebomb ticking over our heads when the place would implode if it wasn’t a success.

Today we count 54 members (and counting), over 350 individual event attendees, heading-to-5 (still paying) directors, an equipment list that rivals some research labs, a deserved reputation for creativity, STEAM outreach, community inclusion, irreverence and an almost chaotic ethos of openness, and a list of individuals and organisations that we’ve worked with that constitutes one of the best inter-organisation networks in Northern Ireland.

    Much cozier

    Much cozier

We’re not gonna make a big deal about it; we’ve got a MASSIVE PARTY to do that later, but I wanted... ...

  • Creativity Month, and the Need for Cross-Pollination

Design is often neglected: Kyle Gawley from GetInvited

This past month, we’ve been involved in DCAL’s Creativity Month, in association with Creativity NI.

This allowed us to experiment with ways to bring the general maker and creative community together, through our Makers Meetup programme (which we’ll be continuing as a basic social event), the Bring and Buy sale (that was decimated by unprecedented weather), and our upcoming DIY Guitar Pedal Workshop (which still have spaces available if you order quickly! We have to close sales tomorrow!).

We’ve also been getting involved in other Creativity Month events; I went to Blick Studios Creative Camp. There was a fantastic array of speakers and activities (And Munchies!), and while I had to dart off soon after lunch (Due to our Club Mate arrival…), I was honoured to be speaking about our little lab.

As with most speaking events, the Q&A is often more interesting than... ...

Any similarities to any persons alive, dead, or directing, is purely coincidental

Monday March 25th @ 1900 in the Event Space

It’s that time again, where democracy (otherwise known as “He who shows up, wins”) reigns supreme.

We’ll be doing the usual financial reporting, strategic reporting, etc, but this time round, we really want to encourage the membership to raise any issues they’re having with the space, the community, or the organisation in general.

For mundane things that you’re not worried about people talking about, simply add them to the “Members items to be raised” section on the relevant wiki page (or discuss existing items on that pages Talk page)

Alternatively, if there’s something private you’d like to discuss with the directors, either contact them generally on admin@farsetlabs.org.uk, or individually on bolster@farsetlabs.org.uk, eoghan@farsetlabs.org.uk or david@farsetlabs.org.uk.

Finally, if there is anything you’d like to raise anonymously, we’ve set up the below form to submit your issues.

Farset Labs is what you make of it and we aren’t psychic; we can’t do it... ...
